A Baby Shower in the Mountains

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day for Dazzling Scents.

I got to do my very first Scent Styling event!

Our church was hosting a baby shower for one of our young ladies, and I reached out and asked if I could add fragrance to the celebration. This was really an experiment for me. I had been developing the idea of Scent Styling and writing about what fragrance can add to an event, but now I had the opportunity to actually put it into practice.

And it worked even better than I had hoped.

Creating a Fragrance Journey

The baby shower was being held mostly outside on our church patio here in the mountains. Rather than choosing one fragrance for the entire event, I wanted the scent to change subtly as guests moved from one area to another.

The experience actually began before they ever reached the patio.

In the foyer, I placed a warmer with Icicles and Evergreen. Since we're in the mountains, I wanted that first fragrance to feel natural to our surroundings—fresh, welcoming and just a little woodsy.

Then guests stepped outside.

As they entered the patio, they were greeted with Blooming Hyacinth and Santal. It was floral and beautiful, but the Santal gave it a warmth and depth that kept it from feeling overly sweet.

As guests continued around the patio, that fragrance gently blended into Mist and Magnolia.

Farther along, I combined Magnolia with Soft Plumeria, creating another subtle change in the fragrance as you traveled through the celebration.

There weren't hard lines between any of the fragrance areas.

That was the magic of it.

One fragrance drifted into the next, creating layers throughout the patio without any one scent taking over the entire space.

And Then People Started Noticing

This was the part I had been waiting for.

Would people actually notice?

They did.

I received so many compliments about how wonderful the patio smelled.

And that was when I realized something important:

Scent Styling really works.

People didn't need to know which warmer was where or which fragrances I had selected. They simply knew that the space smelled wonderful and felt inviting.

That's exactly what I want Scent Styling to accomplish.

Fragrance Can Be Part of the Celebration

We spend so much time thinking about the things people will see at an event—the decorations, flowers, table settings, food and little finishing touches.

But fragrance can become part of the memory, too.

A baby shower can smell soft and welcoming.

A mountain wedding can carry hints of woods, florals and fresh air.

A holiday gathering can greet guests with warmth and spice before they ever reach the dinner table.

Every space is different. Every event is different. And the fragrance should be, too.

That's what makes Scent Styling so much fun.

It's not simply choosing something that "smells good."

It's thinking about where guests will enter, where they'll gather, how they'll move through the space and how the fragrances can complement the occasion.

Yesterdays baby shower gave me the chance to see that idea come to life for the very first time.

And I couldn't have asked for a better beginning.
